Coming Soon: The Indian Government’s Drone Policy
The Indian Government is currently in the process of developing an interim operations guideline for civil use of Unmanned Aircraft Systems (UAS) for civil applications.
Use of drones/UAV/UAS for civil purposes was banned by the DGCA late last year, following a public notice dated October 7, 2014.
Minister of civil aviation Mahesh Sharma addressed the Lok Sabha during the question hour, saying that the DGCA was in the process of developing a policy for the use of drones.
The ban was attributed to the lack of standards and recommended practices that meant drones posed as a threat for aerial collisions.
“UAS has potential for large number of civil applications. However, its use besides being a safety issue, also poses security threat,” the DGCA said, in its October 7 notice.
While the government is in the process of drafting the guidelines for drone use by civilians in India, no specific timeline regarding this has been mentioned.
